Looking for a Safer Floor Surface? Rubber Safety Coatings Can Help Improve Environment And Health

By Guest Author Karen Meakings
Rubber coatings have been used extensively throughout the world for over 70 years in the sports industry and for industrial applications. The non slip feature of rubber was probably the number one reason it was chosen, however there are so many other wonderful features to speak of. One feature that is not always brought to light is the way it reduces noise in any area that it is installed. For example, if you have a garage, basement, patio, pool deck, lanai, walkway, corridor, changing room, and the list goes on and on, the foot traffic and echo noise will be almost completely diminished.

Rubber safety coatings are chosen for outside applications i.e. pool decks, driveways, walkways, entryways, any area that has cracking, chipping, spalding and would need to re-pour concrete because the rubber & rock mixture can fix any of the broken concrete. Hairline cracks will never show because the rubber surface will stretch over them. Rubber safety coatings can even be installed over dirt. Rubber & rock are mixed together and installed over tamped down rock to form a solid substrate and then the colored rubber is installed over the foundation. This reduces the need to have concrete poured to expand a deck, walkway, patio or garden area.

Color or black rubber granules are mixed with a durable, compliant resin and troweled over your existing surface to provide a beautiful, poured-in-place surface. The surface is primed with a resin mixture, and then the rubber is mixed with the resin on site and troweled to follow the contour of your surface. It can even be troweled on vertical surfaces. Because the rubber is a high level rubber similar to the durability of a car tire, your surface will last virtually forever. This is one way that it helps the environment! You will never see this surface dumped in a land fill.

Yes, exactly! The next wonderful thing about the manufacturers of this product is; tires are taken from the landfills and recycled. High tech machines actually cryogenically break down the rubber and separate the rubber from the steel belting and the rubber is being sold to surfacing companies and even used with asphalt for paving highways and roads. Many years of technology have been employed to find a way to get rid of these tires, which take up to 500 years to decompose. Burning them caused such toxic air pollution that it wasn't feasible. Chopping them didn't provide the safest solution because of the steel belting. This new technology is the answer to the problem. No more health risks due to air pollution from burning the tires and good use made from the end result.

Another health related benefit to rubber safety coatings and surfaces is reduction of injury from slip/fall, trip/fall accidents. Because of the resilient nature of the rubber, when someone does fall, their impact it buffered and they are less likely to get hurt. Water parks all over the world have installed rubber safety coatings and surfaces to reduce injuries and have even had insurance reductions because of the reduction in complaints made to first aid.
